A-1 TrenchlessWater and Sewer Repair

Trenchless sewer line repair cost: what actually sets the price

Everyone wants a number, and the honest answer is that trenchless sewer line repair cost depends on your line. This guide explains exactly what moves the price, how lining, pipe bursting and digging compare, and how to read a quote, so the number you get makes sense.

Check what your job will depend on

Answer five quick questions about your line. You will not get a made up dollar figure. You will get an honest read on which parts of your job push the price up, which keep it down, and which repair method is likely.

How far is it from the house to the street connection?
What is on top of the line?
What did the camera show, or what have you noticed?
How deep is the line?
Is there a cleanout outside?

The seven things that set the price

Every sewer quote comes down to some mix of these.
  • 01

    Length of the line

Liner and new pipe are priced by the foot, so length is usually the biggest single factor. A house set far back from the street costs more than one close to it.
  • 02

    Pipe size and condition

Heavy roots, scale or grease mean more cleaning before a liner can go in. Badly broken pipe may rule out lining and point to bursting or digging.
  • 03

    Depth

Deeper lines need deeper access pits, and pits past a certain depth need shoring to be safe. That adds time and equipment.
  • 04

    Access

An existing outside cleanout makes everything easier. Without one, we may need to add one, which also pays off at every future cleaning.
  • 05

    Connections along the run

Branch lines that tie into the section being lined have to be reopened from inside the new pipe, which is careful, skilled work.
  • 06

    What sits on top

The cost of putting back a driveway, patio, walkway or mature landscaping is where trenchless usually saves the most.
  • 07

    Permits and the public connection

Some repairs need a permit, and work at or near the utility's connection follows their rules. Both belong in the quote.

Lining, bursting and digging, by cost

Pipe lining builds a new pipe inside the old one. The material and the curing process cost more per foot than plain pipe, but you skip the trench and almost all of the restoration. It shines when the line runs under things that are expensive to rebuild.

Pipe bursting pulls new pipe through the path of the old one while breaking the old pipe apart. It needs a pit at each end and suits lines too damaged to line or too small for the house. The cost is often in the same range as lining, with the difference coming down to the line itself.

Dig and replace has the lowest cost for the pipe itself and the highest cost for everything around it. On a short, shallow line under open lawn it can be the most economical choice. Under a driveway or a mature tree, it rarely is.

A spot repair is the smallest job of all when the damage really is in one place. The camera is what tells you whether it is.

What a good quote includes

Use this list to compare quotes side by side, ours included.
  • 01

    The method, in plain words

Lining, bursting, spot repair or dig and replace, and why that one fits your line.
  • 02

How many feet, and from where to where

A quote for an unknown length is a guess.
  • 03

    Cleaning and prep

Jetting or descaling before lining should be in the price, not a surprise add-on.
  • 04

    Access pits and restoration

Where the pits go, how big they are, and what happens to the surface afterward.
  • 05

    Permits

Whether one is needed and whether it is included.
  • 06

    Camera footage before and after

Before, so you know why. After, so you can see what you paid for.
  • 07

    What could change the price

An honest quote names the unknowns, like a collapse the camera could not get past.

Ways to keep the cost down

  • Get a camera inspection before agreeing to a full replacement. One bad spot is a very different job.
  • Fix roots and small cracks early. A line that is cracked in one place is cheaper to fix than one that has collapsed.
  • Ask about adding a cleanout during the repair. It makes every future cleaning quicker and cheaper.
  • If the line runs under a driveway or patio, ask for the trenchless price. The restoration you skip can outweigh everything else.
  • Ask about financing rather than putting off a repair that is getting worse.

Cost questions

Because the number would be wrong for most people. Two lines of the same length can differ a lot in depth, condition, access and what sits on top. A number that is off by half does not help you plan. A free camera inspection and a written quote do.

No. On a short, shallow line under open lawn, digging can cost about the same or less. Trenchless usually wins when the line runs under a driveway, patio, mature trees or finished landscaping, because you are not paying to rebuild those.

The cheapest real fix is the smallest repair that solves the problem. If the camera shows one bad spot on an otherwise sound line, a spot repair costs far less than replacing the whole run.

Policies vary a lot. Many standard policies do not cover wear and tear on a sewer lateral, and some offer a separate service line endorsement. Check your policy or ask your agent. We can provide camera footage and a written description of the damage if you file a claim.

Yes. Financing is available so you can fix the line properly now and pay over time. Ask about it when we give you your estimate.

Usually because they are quoting different jobs: different lengths, different methods, or one includes prep and restoration and the other does not. Line the quotes up against the checklist on this page and the gap usually explains itself.
